Newt Holds Coupled At Bay

A British couple whose $2 million home was spoiled by last summer's floods are unable to move back in because of POSSIBLE newts. Read on for the rest of this unbelievable story.

John and Margie Histed have been forced to live in a trailer since their 18th-century house flooded last July.

All of the repairs were close to being completed, when a blocked drainage ditch caused it to flood again. But they have been told they cannot unblock the ditch because the Environment Agency suspects that some newts might be living there.

The officials have ordered a three month survey to look for these protected species and it could take several more months to relocate them if they are found.

While waiting for the results, the Histeds have had to put their renovations on hold in case the property floods again.

The survey is not expected to begin before June and the work to relocate newts not begin until the autumn.

The great-crested newt has legal protection, and killing it or disturbing its habitat carries a maximum $10,000 fine or six months in prison.

Sounds like a good trade off to get back into your home. I'll give Orkin a call for you.
