Gas Relief

Here is a possible relief to the high gas prices.

MyGallons is similar to joining any other price club such as Sam's, COSTCO, etc., there is an annual membership fee of $29.95, with $1.95 per fill up and it is backed by a money-back guarantee.

Basically, you pre-purchase fuel at your current MyGallons price and when you are ready to fill up your vehicle, simply visit any of the over 200,000 participating filling stations. The web site states that if a station can accept a regular credit card, it can accept a MyGallons card.

Text messages or e-mails alert MyGallons members to the daily prevailing gas price for their area, helping them not only to decide whether the time is right to redeem pre-paid gas but also whether it is a good time to load their account up with more gas if the price drops.

Recently it was reported that the company received an "F" from the Better Business Bureau citing what it called a material omission of fact in the publicity material distributed as part of the service's launch. MyGallons said its gas redemption program used the Voyager fleet network, a bank-card processing service owned by U.S. Bank, but the bank failed to honor their agreement. MyGallons is currently looking for a new payment network.

You can look at the historical gas prices and see how much gas has risen this year. There is also a good article you can read on fuel speculation.

Credit Cards Puts The Squeeze on Gas Stations

Gas stations are starting to insist on no more credit cards due to the high price of gas.

Problem:
In a recent article, it was noted that the interchange fee, a percentage of the sale price paid to credit card companies on every transaction, is fixed around 2 percent. The problem is that the dollar amount of the fee rises with the price of the goods or services.

As the price of a gallon of gas tops $4, that raises the fees toward 10 cents a gallon. The National Retail Federation pointed out that gas prices expose to the unfairness of the system. Gas stations are paying more in interchange fees because the price of gas has risen, while the cost of processing credit or debit cards remains the same.

Relief:
There is some legislation pending in the U.S. House and Senate would allow merchants to bargain collectively with major credit and debit card companies. There are quite a few states where stations are offering cash customers a discount, with savings from four cents to 10 cents per gallon.

There is even one station in St. Albans, WV that for the last 44 years has a ban on credit cards. Guess they haven't scared off the customers.

Pets Fall On Hard Times Too

Even our pets are feeling the cost of living increases.

In a recent article, the rising costs of gas, food and housing crisis has created an increase in requests for pet food from traditional food pantries. It has also prompted some pet owners to give up their animals, while some owners are trying to save money by forgoing veterinary care.

I do hear that cats taste like chicken.......

Gas Station Search

Gasoline prices change frequently and may vary by as much as 20 percent within only a few blocks it is important to be able locate the service station with the lowest priced fuel. GasBuddy web sites allow motorists to share information about low priced fuel with others as well as target the lowest priced stations to save money when filling up at the pumps! I use it for every fill-up.
