Tina Fey American Express Ad

This AmEx ad shows Tina Fey in action... 30 Rock Style. The funniest part may be when she's reading some papers and tells the guy, "this is good stuff" and he responds, "those are my divorce papers."

At the end of the ad they ask, "Are you protected from unexpected problems? Are you a cardmember?" as if to say that there's no other way to avoid unexpected problems or that no other card (credit or debit) will protect you from fraud.

Just as the AmEx guy starts asking her if she bought 14,000 racquetballs this little blurb shows up on the screen: "Terms, conditions and restrictions apply." That's short for "it isn't really as easy as we make it out to be."

Chase Freedom take III

Another example how using credit cards is supposed to help you be free!? Real freedom is when you stop using them!

Just like any rewards program, nothing in life is free. They expect to make more money off their credit card users than they pay out in these rewards - I'm not faulting them for making money... they're in business, after all. I just would rather they not make any on me or you.

Think about it for a sec... for you to make $1500 in rewards, you'd have to spend at least $50,000 using their card... that's assuming a 3% reward on ALL purchases. Frankly, it just isn't worth the trouble.

Chase Freedom? Run from it!!

MasterCard Pep Talks - Take II

Here's another very funny ad that Mastercard paid a lot of money for, no doubt, but doesn't say anything about their product. Here's another one I posted earlier.

Green Dot Plastic - Devil's in the Details

Besides the obvious garbage this ad purveys (we need credit cards, plastic is safer), people who think they want to use products like this need to be aware of the details... First, let's understand what Green Dot is, exactly. It is a debit card on a checking account that does not use checks. So what makes it so special? The fees, baby, the fees!

First, to get one you have to buy the card... The MSRP is a one-time $9.95. That's kinda like going to a bank and being charged to open an account.

Then, you have a $4.95 monthly fee. That's not too crazy - a lot of banks charge a monthly service charge - but then-again, a lot of banks don't. It is very easy to find one that doesn't and save yourself $60/year.

Here's where the fun starts: to load your card (except for direct deposit) they ding you with a suggested $5.95 fee. That's five bones every time you put money in your account. Again, something a regular bank would not charge.

So, why wouldn't you want to use direct deposit to fund your Green Dot card? Well, they don't let you write checks. You don't get access to your account for ACH transactions (a lot of places like utilities, etc use ACH for automatic monthly payments). You don't get a statement!!!! They even say that it isn't good for recurring and "open end" transactions such as online bill payment or renting a car or booking a hotel... The list goes on.

Fees? You should name your new card Fifi... because using it sounds like this, "Fee Fee, Fee Fee Fee, Fee, Fee Fee."

ATM Fee: $2.50 (plus whatever the ATM operator charges) and $3.00 if it is an international ATM.

Cash Advance: $4.00

Balance Inquiry & Transaction History: If you have to call the automated line: $.75, however, if you have to talk to someone they charge $.41/minute up to a max of $1/call.

Balance Inquiry @ the ATM: $.50
ATM Declined: $.50

If you have an authorization hold you need released, $10.

Card Research & Special Requests: $25 (free if involves a billing error or unauthorized transaction)

All this stuff you get at a bank for free... except some ATM charges. So why would someone choose to use this type of service? Because the ad says to! Because everyone knows that plastic is safer than cash! But in the end if you stay away from these high-fee cards, you'll have more of your cash left over. If you're carrying $500 cash in your pocket and get mugged, you lose the $500. If you use this card very long, you'll lose a bunch in fees. But what are the chances you're going to get mugged? Minimal. And what are the chances you will get killed with fees? Maximal, if you use this kind of card. This doesn't even bring the fact that people spend more when they swipe vs. when they pay with cash. Studies say that people who swipe spend 18%+ more than those who pay with cash... And I heard (I think on the Dave Ramsey Show) that McDonalds found that spending went up by as much as 35% when they started accepting plastic.

As for the "safer than cash" claim, check out this FAQ from their website:

Question: What if someone steals my Card or uses it without my permission?

Answer: You should treat your Card as if it were cash. Guard the account number the same way you would cash or any credit card. Do not share your Card number with anyone. If you lose your Card or believe it to be stolen, you must immediately contact our lost or stolen Card hotline at 1-877-434-3578. We will cancel your old Card, transfer the remaining balance to a new Card and then mail it out to you at the address on file. Fee applies.

MasterCard Pep Talks - What is this about anyway?

Once you watch this ad you might find yourself asking what the thing was about! They don't say anything about their product or service... These ads are just a form of branding... They are not about anything in particular, just about getting the MasterCard brand out in front of as many people as possible - also putting a celebrity's face on the ad makes people who like said celebrity (hopefully) feel loyalty to the brand being pushed.

All that aside, these are very funny ads.

Visa - Are merchants really this rude if you pay with cash?

One more of many ads where "Big Plastic" is making you think cash is not acceptable as a form of payment. Cash (and check writing) exclude "Big Plastic" from making money on the transaction - why else would they push so hard to make their form of payment the only one you'd want to use, be-it credit or debit!

If I were going through a check-out line and were thrown my change - I'd have a word with the manager.

Visa Brainwashing - NYC

This is just one of many examples of how they're trying to make it seem like you're the bad guy if you pay with cash. Funny thing is that I was just in getting gas for my car the other day and there were 4 people in front of me. Each of them paid with credit cards. It took about 8 minutes to get out of the store. One guy had to try three different cards before he got approved. When I got to the cashier, I handed her 3 crisp ten dollar bills and walked away smiling and thinking about these STUPID ads!

Weekly (over) Payments Part I

"With my credit, I never thought I could get a brand new computer." Who says you have to use credit to get a brand new computer?

"Weekly payments starting at $29.99!" I just saw an awesome Dell PC (advertised at www.slickdeals.net) for just $389... and that included a 19" Wide screen LCD! Save $29.99 for 13 weeks and pay cash... I'd like to know how long you have to pay Circuit Country? One year? Two Years?

"Their flexible payment plans made it easy on my budget and my kids are getting ahead in school."

Easy on your budget? That's insane. Paying way more for something than it is worth is not easy on any one's budget!

And since when is it required that kids have a PC to get ahead in school? Teach them to not fall for garbage like this and they'll have a better chance at succeeding in life - regardless of how they do in school!

"With my new computer from Circuit Country I started my own business and now I'm my own boss." Good luck with that, buddy!

"Call now and we'll add a free color printer, a free 20" LCD and a free MP3 music player with your paid order."

"* Free promotional items will be delivered upon the first to occur: your balance is paid in full or twelve months after your first payment, without your account going into default under the terms of the Purchase Agreement. Actual items delivered may vary depending upon brand and product availability."

That says that there's at least a one year term on any of their purchases... Now, 52 weeks in a year at (starting at) $29.99 each... is at least $1559.58. Seems like there's nothing free about the "gifts" you get a year or so after you receive your PC. So, how did the guy that started his own business print any invoices during that first year? Hummmm.

Considering you can get a new dell for $389, a 20" LCD TV for about $180, a color printer for about $50 and an MP3 player for about $30; a total of $649... You're getting ripped off. Remember that the "easy payments" only start at $29.99, so they are probably higher! And from the fine print on the ad, there's a good chance that the term of loan is longer than one year!

As for the "exciting credit improvement program" that they want you to ask about... why do you need to improve your credit? So you can get more loans? They've worked so well for you so far! And I have to wonder, do they charge to enroll you?

See Weekly (over) Payments Part II for another example of this rip-off.
